All About Sugar Mama’s – Knoxville’s Newest Taproom & Sweet Shop
The newest taproom to open in Knoxville is also one of the sweetest shops in town. Sugar Mama's is a craft beer bar, offering 16 taps and a bakery. Wait, there’s more -- they serve breakfast all day long!
Having celebrated Sugar Mama's Bakery grand opening May 5, 2016, we quickly learned this young entrepreneurial couple, Mike and Hannah McConnell, believe in community, especially the Knoxville community. They've even been overheard saying, “Community, not competition. There is room for all of us.” They bring a refreshing attitude to the city of Knoxville and the 100 Block of Gay Street is lucky to have them.
What to Try at Sugar Mama's Bakery & Craft Beer Bar
Do you like music, bingo, trivia or comedy? They offer it all, along with a fun, upbeat, diner atmosphere that lends itself to a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll with your mom, or a night out with friends where I recommend the Pepper Prints, a savory cheddar thumbprint cookie with pepper jelly on top, along with a Fanatic Black, a Schwarzbier that is smooth and pairs perfect with savory or sweet. If you're in the mood for a pretzel, they make a great one using Yee-Haw Dunkel served with mustard for dipping.
The menu they offer couldn’t happen without the help of community either. See a theme here? They serve BBQ on Bingo Thursdays along with chicken salad and bangers daily from Willy’s Butcher Shop. Their special coffee roast is from City House Coffee Roasting Company and pairing that, hot or cold, with a fresh danish is just about perfect.
So, if you are in their neighborhood, stop in to Sugar Mama's Bakery and Beer Bar and try one of their drafts or one of their bottled brews. They will help you choose one to pair with whatever baked good you pick. Make sure to order and pay at the counter and, if you can, grab a seat on their dog friendly patio. You will be happy you are part of their community, even if just for a moment.
